David Hockney has painted a stunning portrait of Harry Styles, which will be unveiled at the National Portrait Gallery in London this autumn. The painter captured the pop star with her hair tied back, wearing a red and yellow striped cardigan and a string of pearls around her neck. The portrait began in May 2022, when Styles visited David Hockney at his studio in Normandy, France.
“David Hockney has been reinventing the way we see the world for decades,” Styles told Vogue. “It was a complete privilege to be painted by him.”
Styles' image is one of more than 33 new works completed between 2021 and 2022 and will appear in Hockney's upcoming exhibition, which opens on November 2. Entitled “David Hockney: Drawing from Life”, the exhibition is an updated version of an earlier presentation of Hockney portraits that opened at the National Portrait Gallery just weeks before the 2020 lockdown. and watercolor paint and iPad, which Hockney pioneered as a new tool for making art.
Since then, the National Portrait Gallery has undergone a major makeover, and the time has finally come to give David Hockney his due. Unlike the 20-day run of the ill-fated original exhibition, the expanded and re-enacted exhibition will remain open until January 21, 2024. Tickets went on sale this week.
