John Mary Gusmão (Lisbon, 1979) has developed, over more than two decades, a unique body of work that spans experimental cinema, photography, sculpture, drawing, literature and curating.
Between 2001 and 2018, he stood out for his intense collaboration with Pedro Paiva, a partnership that profoundly marked Portuguese contemporary art. During this period, they created a vast collection of 16mm films presented in immersive installations. These works were organized into cycles such as Magnetic Effluvium, Abyssology and ParrotFurthermore, critics recognized the duo's ability to "assay the abyss" through philosophical, biological, and para-scientific observations.
In parallel, he expanded his work to curating. One of the most relevant examples is the project dedicated to Eugène Frey at the Nouveau Musée National de Monaco (2020), where he presented an alternative interpretation of the history of light projection.

The artist has presented his work at the Serralves Museum in Porto and at the Haus der Kunst in Munich, both recognized for their relevance in the European art scene. Furthermore, her work has been shown at the Ikon Gallery in Birmingham, the Kunsthalle Düsseldorf in Germany, and the Centre Pompidou-Metz in France, reinforcing her presence on the international art circuit. In the United States, she has presented projects at the New Museum in New York. She has also participated in the Venice Biennale, where she represented Portugal, and the Gwangju Biennale in South Korea, one of the most influential platforms for contemporary Asian art.
Beyond this institutional presence, he maintains regular collaborations with artists such as Alexandre Estrela, Mattia Denisse, and Gonçalo Pena. These partnerships deepen dialogues that traverse cinema, philosophy, and visual experimentation. He also works continuously with ZDB – Galeria Zé dos Bois, in Lisbon, where he develops curatorial, editorial, and exhibition projects.
