Carlos Sebastián Pedro Hubert de Haes was a 19th century Spanish painter of Belgian origin known for his landscapes, which marked the history of Spanish art. Haes is often mentioned alongside Jenaro Perez Villaamil and Aureliano de Beruete as one of the three great Spanish masters of landscape painting, the latter being his pupil. In the 1850s, Carlos de Haes played an important role in the emergence of the realistic school of landscape painting. Coincidentally, his paintings of landscapes and wildlife at the Monasterio de Piedra occurred at the time of an academic opening for the School of Painting of the Royal Academy of Fine Arts of San Fernando, where selection was made through a landscape competition. In 1857, he became the first professor of landscape painting, being the first in Spain to teach painting directly from nature. In 1860, he became an academic at the Royal Academy. In 1876, he presented the work "La Canal de Mancorbo en los Picos de Europa" at the National Exhibition, later acquired by the Spanish state to join the Museo del Prado collection, due to its importance as a realistic representation of the Spanish landscape. At the moment, Carlos de Haes is celebrated by his innovative approach to landscape painting, which capture the unique essence of Spain, and for its fundamental role in the development of landscape painting in 19th century Spain. The works continue to be valued as part of Spain's artistic heritage.
