Susan Norrie nasceu em Sydney, Austrália, em 1953. Estudou na National Art School de Sydney e na National Gallery School de Melbourne entre 1972 e 1976. Iniciou a sua carreira na pintura, expandindo posteriormente a sua prática para vídeo, fotografia e instalação, explorando temas políticos, ambientais e humanitários.
Participou em importantes exposições internacionais e representou a Austrália na 52ª Bienal de Veneza, em 2007. Expôs também em instituições e eventos como o Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum de Nova Iorque, Tate Modern de Londres, Bienal de Sydney, Yokohama Triennale, Montreal Biennale e ZKM Karlsruhe. Entre as suas obras mais conhecidas destacam-se Undertow (2002), Passenger (2003), Havoc (2007) e Transit (2011).
Recebeu diversos prémios e distinções, entre eles o Moët & Chandon Art Award em 1987 e o Australia Council Visual Arts Award em 2019. As suas obras integram coleções como a National Gallery of Victoria, Art Gallery of New South Wales e o Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum.
