Ruth Álvarez nasceu em Oviedo, Espanha, em 1995. A sua formação académica inclui uma graduação em Belas Artes pela Universidade de Salamanca, Espanha, e um Mestrado em Estudos Avançados em História da Arte pela Universidade de Barcelona, Espanha.
A pintura de Ruth Álvarez enquadra-se nos contextos da nova figuração e do naïf contemporâneos, apresentando um mundo de fantasia com personagens e espaços conformados por cores vibrantes e paisagens oníricas. O retorno ao natural, ao animal, ao místico ou ao cósmico é pertinente na sua obra.
O imaginário da artista parece conter um mundo a ser reparado e, simultaneamente, sugere a possibilidade de outro lugar. As suas personagens surgem em harmonia com a natureza, falando a partir da ferida produzida por uma sociedade absorvida pela sobre-informação, consumo excessivo, estereótipos e imediatismo.
Ruth Álvarez utiliza principalmente figuras femininas, enquanto as figuras masculinas são representadas afastadas do conceito tradicional, com uma "masculinidade mais próxima da ternura e do cuidado". Toda a sua obra é unida por uma caraterística luz laranja, e a música também faz parte do seu processo criativo.
A artista foi uma das três selecionadas em 2023 pelo Instituto Asturiano da Juventude para integrar a programação da Sala Borrón na temporada de 2024-2025.
