Rafa Fernández (Liège, Bélgica, 1966) é um fotógrafo com uma vasta trajetória profissional que se desenvolve em Espanha. Atualmente, reside em Gijón, Astúrias, Espanha, onde tem uma forte ligação com a comunidade artística.
Ao longo da sua carreira, Rafa Fernández trabalhou com o "Espacio Foto" (Madrid, Espanha) e com "El Arte de lo Imposible" (Gijón, Espanha). As suas exposições individuais incluem mostras em Mediadvanced (Gijón, Espanha) e no Festival SegoviaFoto, realizado no Palácio de Quintanar. Em 2021, inaugurou a exposição individual American Way no Antiguo Instituto Jovellanos, em Gijón.
O seu trabalho também integrou numerosas mostras coletivas, incluindo várias edições do Festival Hablando en Plata. A sua última exposição coletiva, El gran libro del mundo. Una década de fotografía en Asturias, foi apresentada no Museu Juan Barjola (Gijón, Espanha) em abril de 2021.
Na sua obra, a fotografia e o conceito de viagem estão intrinsecamente ligados. O artista relata que a sua perceção visual foi moldada pelas longas viagens de carro desde a sua Bélgica natal, de volta a Astúrias (Espanha), com o enquadramento da janela do carro como o seu primeiro olhar fotográfico.
Embora tenha registos de vários países, como o Japão, a sua maior atração são os Estados Unidos da América. As suas referências artísticas e musicais – incluindo o jazz, o blues, a fotografia de Robert Frank, Garry Winogrand e William Eggleston, e a pintura hiper-realista de autores como John Baeder ou Richard Estes – estão diretamente vinculadas a essa nação. O seu interesse pelo período americano dos anos 50 é notório, levando-o a procurar nas cenas e objetos que fotografa uma sensação vintage, transportando a imagem para fora do seu espaço temporal real.
