Pedro Proença was born in Lubango, Angola, in 1962, and from a very early age showed interest and talent in the field of visual arts. At the age of 13, he was already drawing, especially creating comics. His passion for drawing led him to seek formal education in the arts, having studied at the Sociedade Nacional de Belas-Artes and the Escola Superior de Belas Artes de Lisboa, in Portugal.
During your studies, Pedro Proença he had the opportunity to meet the painter João Vieira, who became a notable influence on his artistic career. In 1982, he founded the Homeostético Movement together with other artists, such as Fernando Brito, Ivo, Pedro Portugal, Manuel João Vieira and Xana. This delirious artistic movement explored complex, erotic, humorous and political themes.
His first solo exhibition took place in 1984. In 1988, he had the opportunity to participate in the Venice Biennale, a significant recognition of his work.
Pedro Proença is known for his diverse stylistic approach, which incorporates elements from different historical periods, such as baroque, rococo and conceptual art. His artistic work creates a delirious mix of hundreds of heteronyms, fictional characters who are artists, writers and curators, exploring forms and fiction in a way similar to the procedures of the Oulipo movement.
In addition to painting, Pedro also dedicated himself to illustration and publishing books of poetry, fiction and essays. His artistic expression is versatile and comprehensive, revealing his love for drawing as his preferred medium, but also exploring other forms of creation.
At the moment, Pedro Proença lives and works in Lisbon, leaving his mark on the art scene with his regular exhibitions and his multifaceted approach to art.
