An elegant work by Julio Sendino, entitled “Qvadrum”, created using the water encaustic technique. An abstract and geometric composition that evokes balance, harmony and solidity through colours and structured shapes. This piece conveys a vibrant and contemplative energy to any space. The work was a finalist in the 7th Camarote Madrid Painting Competition 2019, in León. The central structure of the painting refers to symbolic architecture, an altar surface or a primordial construction, set against an earthy background. The upper part, with figures in broken dark tones, suggests an urban or mountainous silhouette outlined against a golden sky. The lower vertical lines, perhaps hidden, challenge the sense of stability. The work plays with the perception of volume and two-dimensionality, creating an open, spiritual or even ritualistic space, where each shape seems to contain a hidden meaning.
About water encaustic:
Water encaustic is a painting technique that uses beeswax as a binder. Unlike traditional encaustic, which is applied hot, in this variant the wax is emulsified in water using natural emulsifiers such as Marseille soap or borax. This allows a stable painting paste to be obtained when mixed with pigments, without the need for heat or solvents. The resulting paint is applied cold to porous supports such as wood, cardboard or prepared canvas, and when dry, it forms a matte, velvety and slightly water-resistant surface. Although it does not achieve the intense shine or transparency of hot encaustic, it offers a very particular and natural texture. This technique has been revived by contemporary artists who are looking for more sustainable and less toxic processes. Its main advantage lies in the combination of the resistance and durability of wax and the accessibility of cold work, which makes it an attractive option both for its aesthetics and its low environmental impact. In addition to eliminating the use of heat and solvents, it provides a safer and more organic artistic experience, with unique finishes that reflect the materiality of the elements used.
About Julio Sendino:
Julio Sendino is an artist from Valladolid whose training in drawing and painting has allowed him to develop an artistic career that encompasses various forms of expression, oscillating between the figurative and the abstract.
Geometric abstraction is a movement of abstract art that emerged in the 1920s, based on the use of simple geometric shapes combined in subjective compositions. It is also an exaltation of two-dimensionality and a critique of the efforts of previous artistic movements to represent three-dimensional reality. Wassily Kandinsky is the best-known and most influential artist of this movement, alongside Malevich and Mondrian.
