José Cândido foi uma figura de relevo nas artes plásticas e no design de comunicação em Portugal. Desenvolveu um trabalho marcante nesta área, em estreita relação com o desenho e a fotografia, tanto na prática profissional como no contexto pedagógico.
Exerceu funções docentes na Faculdade de Belas-Artes da Universidade de Lisboa, onde assumiu um papel central na licenciatura em design, contribuindo de forma decisiva para a formação nesta área. Destacou-se pelo seu domínio gráfico e pela inclinação para a pintura, bem como pelo contributo na afirmação do design de comunicação em Portugal, participando na reforma artística de 1976/79 e desenvolvendo soluções inovadoras.
Ao lado de artistas como Rogério Ribeiro e Luís Filipe de Abreu, esteve envolvido na luta pelo desenvolvimento e atualização do Ensino Superior Artístico, particularmente na área do design de comunicação, num contexto em que esta disciplina ainda era pouco reconhecida em Portugal.
