Gizela N
Midnight #9
Oil on canvas
50x50cm
Midnight is part of a collection where the color purple was introduced, in partnership with the color red. They can be together or separate, and in various supports and painting techniques. In this case the idea was to achieve a feeling of free and spontaneous watercolor, very watery, but subversively done with oil painting, being much more difficult to achieve this effect. Also the "fall" of the supposed water, is inverted in face of the direction of gravity.

Gizela N, Portuguese artist, was born in Luanda in 1973 and is recognized
as a multidisciplinary visual artist. Works with mixed techniques in
field of painting and sculpture, the color being red and the wool thread being red,
the elements that most characterize his art.
Gizela N believes in the power to transform pain into love, and it is through his
art that this transformation becomes visible. The color red and the wool threads
connect with humanity and its most visceral emotions, such as
birth and death, pain and joy, also alluding to the power of
love present in the Greek myth “Ariadne's Thread” and in the Japanese legend Akai Ito.
Fernando António Baptista Pereira, full professor and curator, talks about the
work of Gizela N, saying that, through “sewing and darning from threads
of wool, the artist reinvents a truly sculptural dimension of
painting” and “the darning of the crack suggests a repair”, this being the power
curator and transformer of the art of Gizela N.

Gizela N graduated in Sculpture at the Faculty of Fine Arts of Lisbon and has already
held exhibitions both nationally and internationally, including the most
recent at the Project:ARTspace gallery in New York, in 2023. Since 2022,
has his own gallery in Cascais, Portugal.
