José Herculano Stuart Torrie de Almeida Carvalhais, known as Stuart Carvalhais (Vila Real, Portugal, 1887 – Lisbon, Portugal(born 1961), was a multifaceted and central figure in the first half of the 20th century in Portugal, standing out as a painter, illustrator, caricaturist, set designer, and one of the pioneers of comics in Portugal. In Lisbon, he pursued technical studies at the Royal Institute (1901-1903) and trained in Jorge Colaço's tile painting studio (1905). His career began as a photojournalist, quickly evolving into prolific work as a designer and humorist for major Portuguese newspapers and magazines.
