René Bertholo nasceu em Alhandra, em 1935, e faleceu em Vila Nova de Cacela em 2005.
Embora as artes plásticas, da pintura à escultura, tivessem sido o núcleo central da sua obra, também se dedicou à música erudita.
Frequentou a Escola de Artes Decorativas António Arroio, em 1947, e a Escola Superior de Belas-Artes de Lisboa até 1957.
Nesta fase, ainda estudante, começa a expor as suas criações, desde logo participando a convite de Júlio Pomar na VII Exposição Geral de Artes Plásticas.
No ano seguinte, no I Salão de Arte Abstrata, da Galeria de Março.
Em 1956 organizou então um atelier no Rossio, com os pintores José Escada, Gonçalo Duarte e João Rodrigues Vieira. Mário Cesariny, Luiz Pacheco, Herberto Hélder e Mário-Henrique Leiria, figuras cimeiras do surrealismo e do modernismo português, faziam parte do seu círculo.
René Bertholo em 1959 foi Bolseiro da Fundação Calouste Gulbenkian em Paris, executando pouco depois os primeiros desenhos e monotipias de acumulação e espalhamento de imagens.
Homem do mundo e com uma carreira sólida na Europa.
René Bertholo regressou a Portugal definitivamente em 1981, estabelecendo-se no Algarve e prosseguindo assim uma carreira fecunda, recheada de prémios.
O Museu de Serralves dedicou uma grande mostra retrospetiva à sua obra, em 2000.
