Maria João Franco é uma artista plástica Portuguesa multifacetada, nascida em Leiria em 1945. Filha do dramaturgo Miguel Franco, foi exposta ao mundo literário e artístico desde cedo. A sua formação começou no Círculo de Artes Plásticas de Coimbra aos 15 anos, seguindo-se o curso de Pintura na Escola Superior de Belas-Artes de Lisboa (ESBAL), sob a orientação de mestres como Gil Teixeira Lopes e Soares Branco. Embora tenha frequentado Arquitetura na Escola Superior de Belas-Artes do Porto (ESBAP), a sua paixão pela pintura prevaleceu, desenvolvendo um estilo influenciado pelo expressionismo abstrato e pela figuração, em parte devido à sua relação com o pintor Nelson Dias. Com uma carreira prolífica desde meados dos anos 80, a sua obra em pintura e gravura está presente em importantes coleções públicas e privadas, e foi exibida em inúmeras mostras individuais — como Silêncio de Organa (Leiria, 1994) e Novas Estórias do Corpo (Lisboa, 2002) — e coletivas em Portugal e no estrangeiro; em 2023, o Banco das Artes Galeria em Leiria dedicou-lhe a retrospetiva Genesis – Eros erótica. A qualidade e o vigor da sua prática valeram-lhe diversas distinções, como o Prémio de Edição na IV Exposição Nacional de Gravura da Fundação Calouste Gulbenkian, o Prémio MAC Carreira (2006) de Lisboa, a Medalha de Mérito Cultural do Ministério da Cultura Português e a Medalha de Prata da cidade de Leiria por mérito cultural e artístico (2012), consolidando-a como uma figura proeminente nas artes plásticas portuguesas.
