Maria Fernanda Amado é uma pintora de raiz clássica, mas com um sentido moderno na simplificação e na vagueza das formas e cores. Expõe em Lisboa, na Sociedade Nacional de Belas Artes (Portugal), desde 1965.
A sua obra tem sido elogiada pela crítica, sendo descrita como uma pintura onde se observa "um pouco de Cézanne na estrutura formal, na construção dos espaços, nas manchas de cores e tons sobrepostos" e algo de Vlaminck ou Stael na acentuação da cor e da sua carga de expressão (Lima de Carvalho, 1983). A artista foi reconhecida pela sua evolução "da quase timidez à certeza", que a coloca num "justo lugar de destaque" (Álvaro Egídio, 1985).
Maria Fernanda Amado realizou exposições individuais na Galeria de São Francisco, em Lisboa, Portugal, em 1983, 1985 e 1986.
O seu trabalho está representado em Museus e Galerias Nacionais e Estrangeiras e integra numerosas coleções particulares espalhadas por vários países, incluindo Portugal, Alemanha, Áustria, Brasil, Canadá, Espanha, Estados Unidos da América, França, Hong-Kong, Inglaterra, Japão, Noruega e Suíça. A sua obra está citada em publicações de referência, como o Dicionário de Pintores e Escultores (I Vol.) de Fernando de Pamplona e o Portugueses 20th Century Artists de Michael Tannock (Londres, 1978).
