Manuel Casimiro Brandão Carvalhais de Oliveira (Porto, November 21, 1941) is a painter, sculptor, photographer, designer, Portuguese filmmaker, who resides and works in the port.
In 1976 he receives a scholarship from the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation to develop a research project in the area of visual arts, then starting to France for two years. He travels through Europe and USA, having resided in New York between 1978 and 1979. It is fixed in Nice, a city where it will remain for more than eighteen years. It is during this voluntary exile that he catches knowledge and relates to intellectuals like Eduardo Lourenço, Michel Butor, Vincent Disagreements, Jean-François Lyotard, Raphael Monticelli, Pierre Restany as well as with Peggy Guggenheim. He first exposes in 1968 in Gallery 111, by Manuel de Brito. It makes more than forty individual exhibitions. At collective he is present in more than eighty, in Portugal, Spain, France, Switzerland, Belgium, United Kingdom, United States, Brazil and Japan.
His work, in addition to figuring in private collections in several countries, also marks in the estate of various museums, including the Modern Art Center of the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation (Lisbon), the Berardo Collection Museum (Lisbon), the Foundation of Serralves (Porto), the Galician Center of Contemporary Art (Santiago de Compostela), Iberonian Museum and Ibero-American Art of Contemporary Art (Badajoz), the Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art of Nice, the Municipal Museum João de Castilho - Nucleus de Contemporary art (take).
In 2008, he agrees, organizes and edits the work "100 years. 100 books" which brings together a set of texts from the authoring of the director Manoel de Oliveira, his father, written between 1991 and 2008. Draws in this context a stain in mass silver, in the follow-up Of other objects designed by the author in recent years, of which are highlight spoons, sugar bowl, teapot and port wine funnel in silver, coffee and tea cups, porcelain.
