António Costa Pinheiro (Moura, Portugal, 1932 – Munique, Alemanha, 2015) foi uma figura central e pioneira na arte portuguesa do século XX, cuja obra se desenvolveu entre Portugal, Alemanha e França.
A sua formação inicial deu-se em Portugal, onde frequentou a Escola Artística António Arroio e a Escola Superior de Belas Artes, desenvolvendo-se nas áreas de Ilustração e Pintura. Trabalhou como artista gráfico e em ateliês de arquitetura, realizando a sua primeira exposição individual em 1956 na Galeria Pórtico, em Lisboa. Em 1957, obteve uma bolsa para estudar Gravura na Academia de Belas Artes de Munique, Alemanha. Foi na capital bávara que iniciou a sua colaboração com um grupo de artistas portugueses, incluindo René Bértholo, Lourdes Castro e Gonçalo Duarte. Em 1960, com uma bolsa da Fundação Calouste Gulbenkian, viajou para Paris, França, onde conviveu com Vieira da Silva e Arpad Szenes. Na capital francesa, fundou o grupo e a revista KWY (1958-1963) com os três colegas de Munique, juntamente com Jan Voss, Christo, José Escada e João Vieira. Em 1961, regressou a Lisboa, Portugal, onde foi detido e permaneceu dois anos em prisão política. De regresso a Munique, Alemanha, em 1965, iniciou o ciclo “Os Reis”, desenvolvendo uma abordagem crítica, com humor irónico, aos monarcas de Portugal, dominada pelo grafismo e pelo tratamento heráldico. A sua pintura demonstrava um pioneiro alinhamento com o expressionismo alemão (Homenagem a Malevitch, 1967), uma tendência quase inédita na arte portuguesa da época. O seu trabalho foi reconhecido internacionalmente, tendo recebido o Prémio Burda de Pintura (1966) e o Prémio da Pintura da Cidade de Munique (1967), ambos na Alemanha. Após um período dedicado ao projeto Citymobil e à escrita, retomou a pintura em 1976, dando início a séries como a de Fernando Pessoa e La fenêtre de ma tête. As décadas de 80 e 90 foram marcadas por inúmeras exposições de pintura, azulejaria e tapeçarias em Portugal (incluindo Lisboa, Porto, Algarve), Munique (Alemanha) e Paris (França). Destacam-se as exposições no Museu Calouste Gulbenkian (1981), Casa Serralves (1990) e Mosteiro dos Jerónimos (1995). Em 2001, foi agraciado com o “Grande Prémio Amadeo de Souza-Cardoso”. António Costa Pinheiro encontra-se representado em inúmeras coleções.
