Armando José Ruivo Alves nasceu em Estremoz, em 1935.
Em Lisboa, fez o Curso de Preparação às Belas Artes, na Escola de Artes Decorativas António Arroio, e, no Porto
Armando Alves frequentou o curso de Pintura na Escola Superior de Belas Artes, que terminou em 1962
Após a conclusão da licenciatura foi nomeado Professor Assistente, na ESBAP, onde introduziu assim o estudo das Artes Gráficas.
Com os colegas Ângelo de Sousa, José Rodrigues e Jorge Pinheiro formou o grupo “Os Quatro Vintes”, em 1968
Com o qual veio a expor no Porto, em Lisboa e em Paris, durante os anos 60 e 70.
É um dos fundadores da Cooperativa Árvore e um dos intervenientes do Lugar do Desenho – Fundação Júlio Resende, no âmbito da qual participou, assim entre 1997 e 1999, em exposições no Brasil, no Chile, em Cabo Verde e em Moçambique.
Tendo começado por uma figuração que pode aproximar-se do universo neorrealista, optou seguidamente por um informalismo matérico desenvolvido na década de 1960.
Mas nos anos 1970, dedica-se à construção de objetos pintados, de grande depuração formal.
A partir dos anos 1980, retoma os valores da paisagem que reformula à luz de um abstracionismo lírico.
Ao longo da sua carreira alcançou importantes prémios e distinções:
Prémio na Mostra de Artes Gráficas Grafiporto 83, no Museu Nacional de Soares dos Reis
O grau de Grande Oficial da Ordem do Mérito, concedido pelo Presidente da República, Cavaco Silva, nas comemorações do 10 de Junho de 2006, decorridas na Alfândega do Porto.
