the portuguese artist Noronha da Costa (1942-2020) stood out in the artistic panorama for his constant study of image and perception. From the late 1960s onwards, he devoted himself fully to painting, exploring collages and the "screen effect" using mirrors and frosted glass. A 1930s painting by Piet Mondrian sold for $51 million at an auction in New York. The piece last sold in 1983 for $2.15 million, which is equivalent to $6.4 million (£5.4 million) in today's money. The head of impressionist and modern art at Sotheby's, where the painting was auctioned, described the purchase as "a once-in-a-generation occurrence".

The gaffe was only discovered this year by curator Susanne Meyer-Büser while planning “Mondrian. Evolution”, a new exhibition dedicated to the modernist at Kunstsammlung Nordrhein-Westfalen K20 in Düsseldorf, Germany.
