The New Artists of P55.ART — November'22 Edition
Every day new artists register on P55.ART, however our platform already has more than a thousand artists, and the following question arises: Who are the new artists on P55.ART? Discover in this article five artists, full of new ideas that contribute to an increase in the diversity of cultural expressions.
1. Madalena Pequito
Madalena Pequito was born in Lisbon, in 1996. He studied Visual Performing Arts at the António Arroio Artistic School, graduated in Painting at the Faculty of Fine Arts in Lisbon, and master's degree in Arts and Cultural Enterprise at the Central Saint Martins Faculty, in London. Throughout its journey, it has always sought to integrate various projects and promote dialogue with other artists and actors in the field. Currently, he works on his artistic practice in his atelier in Anjos 70, which allows him to get in touch with other artists in the creative process. In 2018 she participated in the 1st Macau International Biennial, in 2019 she received an honorable mention at the Bienal Jovarte de Loures and in 2020 she was selected for the Retirement Call award.
2. Rita Leitão
Rita Leitão, was born in Lisbon in 1998. In 2020 he finishes his degree in Painting at FBAUL. During this period, he participated in group exhibitions, highlighting “Elogio da Matéria”, SNBA, Lisbon (January 2019) and “X Bienal de Artes Plásticas Santa Catarina”, Leiria (September 2019). In 2019 attends the Facultad de Bellas Artes, Universidad del Pays Vasco, Bilbao, through the Erasmus programme. He dedicates his body of work to the dialogue between Art and Life. They are the everyday motifs that assume a prominent role, mainly in the world of Painting and Visual Arts, with a strong experimental character in the very construction of objects that are born to inhabit this new imagery space.
3. Manolo Valdes
One of the most internationally recognized contemporary Spanish painters and sculptors, Manolo Valdés was born in Valencia in 1942. He attended the Real Academia de Bellas Artes de San Carlos de Valencia and began his career in the 1960s as one of the founding members of Equipo Cronica, a group of artists who were inspired by Pop Art to challenge Franco's Spanish dictatorship and Art History itself. When the movement ended in 1981, Valdes continued his own artistic exploration centered on the appropriation and reinterpretation of masterpieces. He currently lives and works between Madrid, Spain and New York, USA.
Manolo Valdés has developed an individual style that revisits history without distorting the original theme. Citing figures from well-known artworks by old masters such as Velázquez, Rembrandt, Rubens, and Fra Angelico, as well as 20th-century masters such as Matisse, Picasso, and Lichtenstein, Valdés revitalizes these familiar images, taking them out of their original context. In both paintings and sculptures, it increases the size of the figure, abstracting form and downplaying detail, while incorporating lots of coarsely applied paint and unusual materials. The timelessness of the image as the axis of the visual experience is decisive in his creations. In his works, image and matter merge in a work that transits between Pop Art and material art, between social and political commitment and the continuous search for reinvention.
4. Emerenciano
Emerenciano, a Portuguese plastic artist, was born in Ovar (Portugal) in 1946. Course in Decorative Painting at the Soares do Reis School of Decorative Arts in Porto. Graduated in Visual Arts – Painting, in 1976, by the Porto Superior School of Fine Arts, after completing military service and more than two years in the so-called colonial war. He received a grant from the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation, an institution that also grants him a post-graduate subsidy, another one for the study trip he takes to Paris, and he receives occasional help with the production of documents about his activity.
From 1973 onwards, he defined his painting as an approach to writing, the title of an individual exhibition that he held at Galeria Modulo in 1979, the first that he held in the city of Porto, of a path guided by the motivation of writing as a purpose, without wanting to go beyond the boundary that separates images from words. The writing is represented. Afterwards, other complementary developments are assumed, and writing will come to declare itself through reflection texts, and poetic writing leads the author to publish books.
In 1980, he began to participate regularly in international exhibitions of Mail Art and Visual Poetry, accepting the invitations sent to him, and his motivation was a sufficient factor for carrying out related developments close to the poetics of the post office, characterized by the small format, envelope, postcard, stamp, and postmark.In 2000, he represented the Municipality of Ovar in an International Plenary of Artists that took place in the city of Pernik - Bulgaria.
5. María Sánchez
A multidisciplinary and restless artist, she works in drawing, painting and sculpture, where she finds her greatest expressive development. Although the human body is the central motif of her work, both for its anatomy and for the movement it generates, her works also represent a personal reflection on today's woman, her concerns, reflections and desires through marked lines, volumes and blunt voids. , as well as the choice of material and composition. It has an extensive curriculum of competitions, competitions and specialization courses in sculpture. He has participated in numerous national and international exhibitions and fairs in countries such as Spain, Portugal, France, Italy, United Kingdom, United States, China, Denmark and Germany.
