Porto Photography Biennial seeks artists to join the European photography network

Bienal Fotografia do Porto procura artistas para integrar rede europeia de fotografia

The selected photographers will integrate the Futures platform and enjoy workshops  and masterclasses from Magnum Photos, a trip to Budapest and 500 euros.

The Porto Photography Biennial will nominate 5 emerging artists from the field of photography residing in Portugal to join the European Futures community in 2023. The selected artists will enjoy an international exchange from a network of institutions, curators, artists and audiences, enhancing visibility and new professional opportunities. Bienal Fotografia do Porto is one of the 18 members of FUTURES. During the year 2023, the 5 selected artists will have access to:

  1. €500 fee;
  2. Opportunity for tutorial follow-up by a FUTURES member to be designated (up to 3 sessions);
  3. Travel and accommodation for participation in the FUTURES Annual Event in Budapest, in October 2023, which includes portfolio presentations to FUTURES member representatives, workshops, among others;

  5. FUTURES Magnum Creative Workshop;
  6. Publication of a portfolio, text and biography on the FUTURES website and on social networks;

Applications are open until the 21st of January. The objective, refers to the platform Cycle, organizer and producer of the Bienal, is the integration of the five artists whose works stand out the most in the “largest European platform of contemporary photography”, the futures, of which Ci.CLO is a member, which annually develops a series of activities for the development of the sector and the promotion of the careers of artists in the area.
The artistic director of the Bienal Fotografia do Porto, Virgílio Ferreira, mentions, in a statement addressed to P3, that the emerging artists who win this initiative will have the chance to enjoy an international exchange that will “enhance the visibility” of their work and promote “new professional opportunities” – a possibility, he underlines, “that could have a positive impact on the work and path of the chosen artists”.
But what does integration into the Futures platform translate into in practice for artists, throughout 2023? These will have, underlines Ci.CLO, “[free] access to a set of workshops and masterclasses guided by Magnum agency”; the opportunity to travel “with travel and accommodation assured”, to Budapest, in October; and will be able to participate in the Futures annual event, which includes “portfolio presentations to member representatives” of the platform.

The five winners will also have the opportunity to publish, for which they will receive a payment of 500 euros, a set of images of their own authorship in the catalog and website of the European platform. Those that are considered the best works at European level will also be part of an itinerant exhibition.

Applications can be made by filling in a form on the Ci.CLO website and the results are announced on February 1st.
