António Winter (1944 - 2016)

Title: Taurus

Technique: Oil on wood

Year: 1987

Dimensions: 50 cm diameter

With frame

A painter and specialist in screen printing, Winter collaborated with the magazine Seara Nova, and worked with artists such as Júlio Pomar, Marcelino Vespeira, António Charrua, Eduardo Nery, Maria Keil, Francisco Relógio, Jorge Vieira, Espiga Pinto, Paula Rego, Manuel Cargaleiro, Artur Bual and Mário Cesariny, among others, performing several serigraphs by different artists. Like Almada Negreiros, he was one of the designers chosen for the interior decoration of the headquarters of the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation, in Lisbon.

In 1972, he opened a serigraphy atelier in Rua da Emenda, in the Portuguese capital, also a space for various gatherings, and later came to have a workshop in Beja, from where he was evicted. He was currently working at the Escola Superior de Educação in the capital of Lower Alentejo.
António Winter was a founding partner of the association AR.CO - Center for Art & Visual Communication and of the Almada Cultural Center, where he participated in various cultural activities. He was a member of the National Academy of Fine Arts.

The artist made posters for plays, including O Suicidário, by Nikolai Erdman, starring Mário Viegas, at Teatro Aberto. In an interview with Diário do Alentejo, António Winter said: "I've worked a lot with theatre. Theater has always given me a certain mental elasticity, because an individual is always making a model or something else, he never stops. And it seems bad to say- lo, but I have posters about the theater with a certain joke".

In 1995, he won the National Painting Prize of the National Academy of Fine Arts. The President of the Republic Mário Soares awarded him the rank of Commander of the Order of Infante D. Henrique. Last year, in May, he opened an exhibition of paintings and serigraphy at Galeria dos Escudeiros, in Beja.

About his work, he told the same Alentejo daily: "In general, my things have a Masonic charge. Because it is a philosophy that I defend and practice for many years". On the works of art, he stated in a press interview: "The painter only considers the work completed when he gives up on it and completely loses contact; otherwise, he never ceases to crease another contour, to put more light on it here, or to shadow him there an expression". The artist is represented in several public and private collections, as well as in museums, in Portugal and abroad.
