The son of Cape Verdean parents, originally from the island of Santiago, he grew up in Bairro dos Pescadores, a former shantytown in Quarteira, where his parents had moved upon arriving in Portugal. \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThis neighborhood, which after the April 25th Revolution became home to emigrants from the former Portuguese colonies, namely Angola, Cape Verde, Mozambique, and São Tomé and Príncipe, began to be demolished in 1997.
